Facebook ads agency or do it yourself? An honest comparison

2026-08-04

When an agency is worth the money, when it is not, and what actually changes if you run your own Meta campaigns.

This is not a neutral question for us, so here is our bias stated upfront: we build a tool that helps people run their own ads. That said, there are cases where hiring someone is clearly right, and pretending otherwise would not help you.

When an agency genuinely earns its fee

If you are spending more than roughly ten thousand euros a month, the difference between a good media buyer and an average one is worth far more than the retainer. At that scale, small improvements in efficiency dwarf the fee.

The same applies if your account is genuinely complex: a large product catalogue, several markets and languages, or a long sales cycle with offline conversions to reconcile. That is real work requiring real expertise.

And if your own time is worth more than the fee, the calculation is simple. An hour spent on ads is an hour not spent on the thing you are actually good at.

When it does not

Below a few thousand euros a month, the maths rarely works. A five hundred euro retainer on a six hundred euro budget means you are paying more to have ads managed than you are paying for the ads.

The other case is when the work is not actually happening. If your monthly report is a screenshot of the same dashboard you could open yourself, with a paragraph about optimisation and no specific decisions, you are paying a subscription for a report.

What actually changes when you take it over

You see results the day they happen instead of the first of the month. That alone changes behaviour: it is much harder to keep a losing campaign running for three weeks when you can see it losing.

You stop paying a percentage. Every euro goes to Meta.

You learn what your customers respond to, and that knowledge does not leave when a contract ends. It shapes your product pages, your emails and your offers.

What you give up

Judgement built over hundreds of accounts. A good buyer recognises a fatiguing creative or a broken funnel faster than you will at first.

Time. Not much, but it is not zero. Expect a couple of hours to launch, then twenty minutes a week.

The honest recommendation: if you are under a few thousand a month, run them yourself until you outgrow it. If you are well past that and the reports say something specific each month, keep your agency.
